Antigua is the largest of the Leeward Islands, and has a sister Island
which is a "stone throw" north of the Island. The twin Islands offer a
major vacation spot for tourism, which is the Islands main economic
activity.
Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. It is
relatively flat, and has an abundance of white sand beaches. The
Island is famous for its sophisticated, elegant resorts, and has been
dubbed the golf centre of the Caribbean.
Bermuda is the northernmost Country of the Confederation, about 650
miles east of North Carolina, U.SA. and is still a British Coloney.
Bermuda is made up of some one hundred and thirty (130) Islands.
Tourism and International Business Company's (IBC's) are the main
sources of foreign exchange. Bermuda is famous for its Festivals.
The Cayman Islands is some 500 miles west of Jamaica and is still a
British Protectorate. The Country has been referred to as the
Financial Centre of the Region and ranks number four (4) in the world.
It has one of the world's highest per capita and standard of living.
There is no direct taxation.
Curacao is a small Island on the northern tip of South America. It is
a member of the Netherlands Antilles, and is one of the two (2) Dutch
speaking Countries of the Confederation.
Dominica is the largest of the Windward Islands, and is volcanic in its
origin. The Island is famous for its high, steep mountains which are
rich in forestation. It is said that the Island has three hundred and
sixty-five (365) rivers/streams, which flow swiftly down to the sea.
Descendants of the Carib Indians still populate the North East of the
Island.
Grenada is one of the Windward Islands, and is famous for its lush
green mountains and excellent beaches. The Capital, St. George's is
built on a natural charming harbour and still is dominated by buildings
that date back to the French and British times. Its sister Island
Carriccou provides an excellent hideaway.
Guyana is part of the South American mainland, on the Atlantic
coastline. The Country is covered with lush hardwood forests,
mountains and huge rivers. It is the most sparsely populated in the
Confederation.
Jamaica is the largest of the CCCU Affiliates. It is blessed with high
mountains, forest, numerous rivers and miles of beaches with brown as
well as white sand.
Montserrat forms part of the Leeward Islands and is still a British colony. The
Island is mountainous and attracted world attention in recent years
with the advent of the Soufrier Hills, volcano that destroyed a major
portion of the Island, including the capital town of Plymouth.
The twin island state of St. Kitts and Nevis forms part of the Leeward
chain of Islands. The French occupied the country in the 18th century, and some Georgian architecture is still evident. It is a very fertile Country and sugar cane is the main crop.
St. Lucia forms part of the Windward Island chain. It
is an Island of high mountains, the most famous being the Volcanic
Pitons in the South West, which are shaped like elongated pyramids.
This Country changed hands some fourteen (14) times between England and
France in the 18th Century. No wonder the inhabitants still speak a rich mixture of English and French (patois).
St. Vincent and the Grenadines is made up of a cluster of thirty (32)
Islands, islets and cays which lies between St. Lucia and Grenada, in
the Windward Islands chain. The
Country's spectacular landscape, beaches and mountains give rise to the
best water sports, a hiker's dream of a quiet hide away.
Suriname is the southernmost Country in the Confederation, and is
located in the northern tip of South America. Suriname is one of the
two (2) Dutch speaking Countries of the Confederation.
The British Virgin Islands consists of some fifty (50) Islands, and is
at the northern end of the Leewards. Tortola is the largest and the
‘capital' of the Country.
Trinidad and Tobago is the most southerly of the Confederation Islands,
at the northern tip of South America. It
is the home of the pitch lake at La Brea which has an inexhaustible
flow having been in use for the last four hundred (400) years. The
Queen's Park Savannah offers one of the largest open parks in the
Region and is the show piece of Trinidad.
