International Year of Co-operatives 2012
IYC Update - April 2002
World Council of Credit Unions President and CEO Brian Branch is one of 150 dignitaries invited to The White House in Washington, D.C., on May 4 for a discussion on cooperatives, jobs and the U.S. economy. Coordinated by the National Cooperative Business Association, a two-hour plenary briefing will be followed by topic-specific breakout sessions. The plenary briefing session will involve White House senior officials and federal administrators with portfolios relevant to the cooperative community. We hope to provide a complete report at the event’s conclusion.
The Singapore National Co-operative Federation continues its year-long IYC celebration with Co-op Hot Shots, a photography competition that focuses on celebrating cooperative enterprise. Photos may be entered in five categories: cooperation, self-help, equality, mutual help and care for others. All submissions can be made in either online or print categories. The competition is open to local (Singapore) shutterbugs as well as members of the international cooperative community with prizes totaling S$20,000. For details go to: http://singapore.2012.coop/hot-shots.
Finally, we invite you to check out the Quebec International 2012 Summit of Cooperatives. The conference, which runs Oct. 8-12 in Quebec City, Canada, is hosted by The Desjardins Group and St. Mary’s University. The agenda features a who’s who of cooperative executives and will be exploring themes relevant to the International Year of Cooperatives and beyond. About IYC 2012
In December 2009, the United Nations proclaimed 2012 as the International Year of Co-operatives (IYC). The IYC aims at raising awareness on the socio-economic impact of co-operatives for promoting the autonomous formation and growth of co-operatives.
Specifically, the aims of IYC are to:
- Increase public awareness about co-operatives, how they benefit their members and contribute to socio-economic development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
- Promote awareness of the global network of co-operatives and their efforts in community building, democracy and peace.
- Promote the formation and growth of co-operatives among individuals and institutions to address common economic needs and for socio-economic empowerment.
- Encourage Governments and regulatory bodies to establish policies, laws and regulation conducive to co-operative formation and growth.
The Year will be planned by the United Nations (UN) in close collaboration with the members of the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Co-operatives (COPAC).
