Mr. Richards became active in the Credit Union Movement in 1956, when he was first elected to the Supervisory Committee of the St. Alphonsus Co-operative Credit Union Ltd., and subsequently as Treasurer in 1958.

He became a Director of the League at its formation in 1959 and served in several capacities including Secretary, Vice President and President as well as a member of the Credit Committee until he demitted office in 1980. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the development of the League’s Field Services and the Central Finance Facility.

At the Regional level, in 1960 Mr. Richards was elected to serve as a Director of the West Indies Conference of Credit Societies (WICCS) and remained a Director until 1972 when WICCS became the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) also serving as a Founding Director until 1975.

As a volunteer, Mr. Richards traversed the length and breath of Dominica, assisting in establishing Credit Unions in La Plaine, Woodford Hill, Coulibistrie, Grand Bay, Riviere Cyrique and Laudat. His life of service to the Credit Union Movement particularly the St. Alphonsus Co-operative Credit Union Ltd., as a volunteer for 27 years, culminated with his appointment as Manager of the Dominica Co-operative Credit Union League Ltd., a position he held from 1986 to 1996.

In 1983 he was recognized for his sterling contribution to the development of the Credit Union Movement by the Government of Dominica, when he was awarded the Sisserou Award of Honour, the Nation’s second highest National Award.

May he rest in Peace.
